Title: February Postal Match
Post by: Daryl on February 02, 2023, 11:12:27 PM
Feb - similar thesis to January's Match.

www.targetz.com targets  page 2  # 10029

http://www.targetz.com/targetzlib/10029.pdf
I liked Dan's scoring system, after figuring it out.
I suggest a cardboard backer to make scoring outlines easier.
25 yards - rest - any type of bench rest, sitting, standing, kneeling. Shoot offhand if you want. High Score wins.
5 shots total on target face. One in each black "bull". Only the inside line cutters score 6 1X(not 8 1X). End point line cutters score 5pts as shown.
1/2 ball inside to score 5 or more.
The 3-line, line cutters (4 possibilities) will score 6 1X. Maximum possible score is 30 5X.
This should/could be a target to score at least 25 to 27 out of 30. The x's will take care of themselves.

Looks like another fun one, but not sure if I can get out for it. I'm on medevac duty until end of next week and then out of town, so I'll have to hope for nice weather for the last weekend.

Looks like "modern" math to me. Hoping it will quit raining one of these weekends and we'll give it a try.

Good effort, PK.  4 good shots. 20/30.
That centre shot is a really good one.

Thanks Daryl, I enjoyed this target. Not sure what the rules are but I thought I would try a different gun and submit another just for fun, not score.

Submit as many as you can. The best score submitted by the end of the month, wins.
The rules are listed in the first post of this thread.

Minus 2 deg here, and cloudy.  I walked out back and shot this target late this afternoon.  25 yards, standing, braced against a tree.  Chambers Siler flintlock, 42 in Colerain .C weight .54 barrel   Single trigger
90 gr FFg, .018 linen patch, bear oil lube, .535 cast ball

Thanks for entering Bob. I see a 15 score. I know you can better that. 3 solid hits. Where's your .40? ;D

Last year, a friend and neighbour on our road  was having a number of difficulties with predators on his small subsistence farm.  Without getting into the politics , obtaining a firearm license in the "Covid" years was even more difficult than normal.
He had expressed an interest in my muzzleloaders etc so., long story short, I spent a couple days working with him and training him, then gifted him my .40 { for those who don't know, a firearms license is not required for a flintlock rifle in Canada]
It is perfect for what he requires, and has put an end to many coyotes, and other varmints.  He was and is extremely appreciative.
I'm now thinking about building another...either a .40 or a .45. We'll see .

That was more than generous of you Bob!  My hats off to you!
I am also thrilled the gun is doing what it was meant to do.... Working for the bloke!

Wonderful story Bob.

Absolutely, great story & quite a 'gesture' on your part, Bob. Well done.
I think there should be a .32 or .36 in your life.

Thanks, Richard, and Daryl.  I'll be 70 in a month and a half, and that is a factor when an opportunity arises to share. When my kids were young, spending a large chunk of $ on myself wasn't in the cards. That's why I ended up building my first  rifle. I'm sure you both know what I mean.
The .40 was a good compromise, since it wasn't too small if I happened on something a wee bit larger than expected when walking the woods. I was seriously considering a .45 but now that you've brought up the .36 ??!!   I'll see what barrels are in stock  ;D

Bob,
I did build one kit, (J. Chambers Mark Silver) but any others had to be home made, for the same reasons as yourself.
I think we are all looking forward to seeing your build!

I tried, great day to shoot, just couldn't make them all connect. Maybe try again before the end of month. At least count me as a participant.

Tks for participating snrub47 - I see a 15 and a 11 1X.
Sure is a nice feature, being able to click on a target a couple times to get enlargements.

Daryl, I shot these back on the 5th. Was hoping to get out and shoot more but the weather said NO.
I shot the one on the left first . I was trying to cut the edges and it didn't go well. The only good shot on it was the dot, which was my last shot. Second target I was just trying to get them in the black.
Anyway thought I would post these since I won't be able to go out again due to wind, snow and mud .sometimes all at once.

Thanks for entering, alacran. I see a 15 and a 15. That one ball is just over 1/2 out. It's very close.

Finally, a Friday without rain and Marc and I made it to the range. Shot from a rest. Rice .40 square bottom rifling, 42 inch x 7/8 straight barrel. Sixty grains of GOEX FFFG. .390 ball with .018 canvas, Hoppes lube. Really nice spring day with overcast and 72F.

Solid 25, JBJ. Well done.
Sounds and LOOKS like a great combination.
72F - LOL - started out this morning at -20 or -30? - warmed right up to -6C tonight.

-6C?  Sounds like spring is right around the corner.  Heck Daryl, you guys will be out shooting in Speedo's by next week! :o

I, ahhhhh, don't wear speedos any more. ;D
Spring should be just around the corner, but the 2 feet of snow we got yesterday seems to argue with that.

I did get out today, -9C, heavy snow.
Not sure if it was the high relative humidity, but I had serious fouling issues. 2 shots and it got very hard to load.
Patches saturated with TOW mink oil and I've used them before and could get at least 5-6 shots off before noticing anything, but not today.
In addition, I was shooting like $#@*. Had a couple of warm-up shots, seemed like I was in the ball park, took the first shot at the target and went '#$!?'. After 2 targets, shooting not improving, struggling with fouling and cold weather, I took out the .22 and shot nearly as bad....at 25 meters? Can't recall shooting this bad in a loooong time.
Packed up my gear, hopped over to the rimfire range and spent the next 30 mins just getting my sight picture back and was shooting decent groups at the end. At that point I was too cold and hungry to continue and called it a day.

Tks for getting out, Jakob. ;)
Usually, it's dry weather that causes fouling problems for most people.

Target printed, but we have a snow storm going on. Maybe a secluded spot in the pines will cooperate with my intentions to try this once more  :)

Well, I shot another target. Dropped a point from the first one I posted. The snow storm lasted all day, but my rifle functioned perfectly. My shooting sucked, though  ::)   Congrats to the winner. This target is a lot more difficult than it looks.

Congratulations JBJ from North Carolina. You are the February winner & thus, your chore is to set up the March Match. This monthly competition has been going on every month now, for 3 full years.

I think I might play in March if it's not  bitter cold still.

Tarp and roasting pans full of hot coals, and after 4 days I finally thawed out the 4 wheeler enough to start.  Did some plowing, so now folks can drive in here again.
I'm not convinced that's a good thing  ;D
