Today, I put in a special order with Kibler…….. A Woodsrunner with a Pear stock!
I see aged, really aged, carved as near the original as I can.
Can’t wait!
Stay tuned.
-
Never seen a pear plank. Seen a couple of Jaegers that were stocked in Pear wood. I'll come up with some excuse to go to the valley. Let me know when it arrives.
-
I've never worked with pear wood, but have heard good things about the different finishes it will take. Congratulations!
-
TDM,
I have never worked with it either. Therefore, I need some input on finishing as well.
Picked up some past articles from ALR, with stain examples. Any help appreciated!
-
Dane, you'll love working with pear. It is very small pored wood, is easy to fill and carves wonderfully. I used pear wood to create all of the blocks for a period ship model, using miniature chisels I made from hacksaw blades.
-
A picture, Taylor, it didn't happen without a picture!!! ;D
As far as talking about Pear as a gun wood, you took the words out of my mouth. VERY popular on "The Continent" during the VERY early days of gun making for monarchies.

Kibler's usually includes scrap pieces for stain and finish experimentation. Call and ask for several to be included, you can use front and back or rip them for even more. And (hint) the slabs can make very nice knife handles.

I've just finished it by tinting the oil fairly heavily with honey amber Transtint dye. I have an example on my website www.jimkibler.net
We sell the the Transtint dye concentrates.

Most originals with pear stocks, had a lot of inlays, gold, silver, pearl and varieties of light coloured wood, but the main stock was a light nut brown - usually.
The very fine pores in the wood were evident.

I have a Kibler SMR that is stocked in pear. I was inspired by Jim's custom work page and really liked the pear stocks. Anyway, I really like mine and glad I got it. Maybe I will try to figure out how to put a picture on here.
-
Might I one up you Dane. I have a plank of apple that I have been sitting on for 20+ years that keeps telling me to put my .25 caliber Ed Rayl barrel into it. :)

Love it David!
I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.
(Haven’t got mine yet)

-
That's a beautiful stock for sure!

Gorgeous, really just stunning!
-
Oh my goodness that is a beauty. Now, carefully, very carefully, move it away from those pointy chain link wires!
-
Its aPEARant this will be a fun build! :D
-
Got that baby today. WAAAAAAY better than I expected. Will try to get photos tomorrow.

WOW! Pear! WOW! :o
-
Beautiful!
-
I’m betting that is gonna turn out wilder than you imagined! I can’t wait to see how you finish it out.
-
Well, it’s finally done!
No stain, a little Transtint black in the finish. Lightly aged, wood and metal.
Two coats of Chambers, tinted with Transtint, 4 coats of Spar varnish, 4 more coats of Chambers oil finish.
Pear was NOT the easiest to work with. A little chippy, but nice and dense.
I’d do it again.

Beautiful rifle
-
That is a stunning rifle!
-
Shouldn't you have done 2 so you would have a "Matching pair/pear".
-
Very nicely done. That detail work really sets it off.
CheersRichard
-
You did a great job on the carving Andy. I know the carvings on the cheek piece appear to be simple, but that makes them more difficult.
The curl in the wood makes it special. Hope I get to see it.
-
Beautiful. The muzzle looks great.
Christian
-
Boy that pear makes for a pretty/unique stock. I really like that.
-
Beautiful wood. I've appearently never seen a rifle stocked in pear. The wood looks much nicer than I would have thought.
-
Very nice!! Wood looks great on that rifle!
-
If you are ever in Paris, tour the Invalides, which is the French war museum at the tomb of Napoleon.
Lots of history, and lots of the early wheel locks and match locks and flintlocks are made from pear.
They didn't stain them, but left them light. Of course, these were "show" guns. I doubt if most of them had been fired.
Carving and engraving that would boggle your mind.
-
Nicely done, Dane! Best,
Ed
-
Does pear darken with age like cherry does? curious. Ken
-
Not the ones I saw in the museum, and they were 300-400 years old.
-
Ken, as far as I know…. No.
I guess only time will tell.
In process, there was no real change between sanding, scraping, so we hope it will stay as is.
-
Just lovely! You did a wonderful job on the carving and kept it to minimum which just right for the lines of this rifle. I want one!
Great job!
-
Cool muzzle treatment. Don Getz would have liked that one, I am sure.
