Title: Tinting Chambers oil finish
Post by: smallpatch on May 07, 2023, 08:36:25 PM
Does anyone have any tips on tinting Chambers oil finish?
Tried mixol, and had trouble getting it to mix.
Transtint is not supposed to work with oils.

Any help?

I use Transtint even if it doesn't want to mix.  Just put a little in the oil, mix it up really well and slather the oil on.  No fuss, no muss.  I tend not to overthink or worry about such things.  With finishing, try something and if doesn't work, try something else.  It's really hard to do any real damage to a stock.

You could also use something like Laurel Mountain Forge's dye stains and add them to the oil.  They'll mix okay, I believe.

Don't see why Transtint wouldn't work. It works well with epoxy.

I use artists oil paints from craft stores like Hobby Lobby. I use black and crimson red depending on the wood.

I used some Old Towne Lehigh Valley red Alcohol based stain in Tru-oil and it worked great. Just a couple drops in a cap tin full of oil, as it's very red.

Who is the supplier of this stain?

That's impossible Allen! ;)  There's no way you could make the quality of guns you do by using an off the shelf prododuct like Minwax!

In all seriousness, I think finish is like a religion to many...

I'm more curious about what he's doing with all those specimen cups.   8)

You mind your own business Eric .... !! Actually they are a super size for doing what we do ... they are inexpensive and deposable ... I don't use em to pee in , their main reason !!

You are correct Jim .. I don't stress out on finish .. I want something that dries sorta quickly , wears well and looks great ..
Tomany dudes over finish their guns ..

I thought I got it from Muzzle loader builders supply, but they don't show it on line. Can't remember were I got it.
