Black could well be graphite.  Mr Flintlock or original Lehigh Valley Lube will remove Graphite.  Give it a try.

Hey Curt! Something should be familiar. That fine Fowler came from you. One of my favorite pieces. If the birds commit it never fails!

That’s great that the bag, horn and measurer are all still intact. You rarely see a kit like that, thanks for showing it to us!

Gun Building / Re: Davis trigger adjustment screw???
« Last post by Bob Roller on April 20, 2025, 12:45:14 AM »
Hi,
I am glad you resolved your problem but I am going to recommend a modification. I don't know how you are equipped to drill steel, tap holes, cut threads, or fabricate small metal things. Assuming you can do those basic things, I recommend drilling the hole in the plate for a 4-48 screw and making a 4-48 adjustment screw to replace the  smaller old one.  That will strengthen the set screw mechanism quite a bit.

Redrill with a #44 drill, countersink it the depth of ONE thread and tap it to 4x40 or 4x48.  3 minute job.

Hi,
Lock screws on pistol locks mostly but sometimes I need small machine screws to anchor nose caps and other mounts. Sling swivels are another item that I often use NO 6 screws for.   In addition, the small screw can be a quick fix for a ramrod that partially blocks the forward lock bolt although I usually turn the center of a larger 8-32 or 10-32
bolt thinner to clear the rod when I need that fix, which I do a lot on slim British fowlers.
