Hi, I am being involved with the makings of a John Noll rifle, I'm considering inletting the ramrod pipe entry, but before I do that, I would like to see what kind of carvings goes behind or around the tang, especially of a Noll type. I'm trying to imitate one that has the picture in the book of KR in its golden age on pg. 511. I wonder if anybody would have several pictures to give an idea of what it would look like. I have not yet cut the final length on the lower forearm, so I can hash out the final layout. Any help would be great.

Hi Steve. Glad to see you back and getting back in the groove. The Kentucky Rifle- A True American Heritage in Pictures has two Nolls but it doesn't show this area. Kentucky Rifles and Pistols 1750-1850 also has two but again, no close ups of the area. One of each book is the same rifle. Hope someone else can be more help.

If you have a picture of the carving around the breech tang, the carving around the entry pipe's tang will be along the same theme. Or at least it could be. Other than that, make something up...

Here is a photo of a J Noll forearm but still not much help for the top view of the entry pipe finial with the carving. The detail of the rest is instructive how ever and I never pass up an opportunity to get more details when ever I can

I was studying the John Noll pic's and found that he was repetitive with the design on this particular rifle. Others may show a greater variance but from these photos I bet you dollars to doughnuts that this is the same patter as the tang carving as well as for the entry pipe. Note the acorn treatment in the crotch of the two volutes. This same feature is repeated on the comb wrist sections, the tang and given what you can see of the acorn in the same place as the others strongly suggests that the ramrod entry pipe has this type of carving surrounding it.
