Nice piece by Steve Davis on Art and Jan's site today. Steve's metal work is just outstanding. It is not often we get to see his guns, but he is one of the best (really was one of the first) of those who followed in Hershel's footsteps with the iron mounted, "Woodbury" style guns. I love the patchbox on this gun.

When I clicked on it this morning and saw the patchbox I thought Woodbury before looking at the rest of the gun. Really nice piece. The metal finish is very appealing to me as well.
I did a search on the blog for his other stuff and the Woodbury influence is there on everything.

Incredibly gutsy move with the patchbox design. I like it.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

This is one of those guns that you look at and see the traces of the influences of some of the great originals out there, but reinterpreted into something unique. I see at least 4 of the great stepped wrist guns in here - there is the obvious influence of the Brass Barreled Rifle and its sister piece from the same shop, shown in Shumway and in Wallace's articles. The patchbox looks to me to have the influence of that great early Rockbridge gun that Wallace has also displayed, sort of combined with the spirit of the "Lady in the Hat" patchbox on the "MA" rifle in the Bivins book.

Yeah, saw that gun, real nice, but, just typical of what Steve does. He had the table next to me at the CLA show and
was fun to look at his stuff, he's very creative........Don
