A beautifull piece. Love the styling, the sideplate, the humped silver wrist inlay, everything.

I am finding a soft spot for these fowlers. Man I like it.  Look at the height of the breach over the barrel. There is a decided hump that Don Getz talked about with the breach tangs they were making at one point that folks complained about. I think I would like to have mine with it. I have seen some with a slight hint of a hump but not like this. Great pic's more if you can get them. I would like to see the tang carving and the treatment at the muzzle end from the first ramrod pipe forward. Here's hoping

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Truly a beauty for sure! Isn't it a wonder how just that little tiny name & date wrist escution answers so many questions we seekers look for in the non-dated, non- signed work! Dick, you must be proud to hold and handle such history! Thank you for shareing it.........Joel

For the record, I prepared a long narrative about the Howe, including its properties and the rich history that it has. As luck would have it, the post button would not function for some reason, and I lost all of it. When time permits, I will try to recreate what I wrote previously.
I sent an email to one of the proprietors of the site as to whether what I wrote can be retreived, or not. Haven't heard anything, so I assume that it cannot. I also hope to provide photos of the tang, the forearm molding, and the buttplate tang with its engraving sometime soon. Might as well include the side plate, too. Sorry for the delay.

Dick, I look forward to your re-typing. I, too, have lost loooong posts, with pictures and all to the stupid 'post' button. For important things, I write it up in my word processor program, then copy and paste into the ALR compose slot. You never know when the durn thing is going to $#@* out on you.

What a great gun.

What a superb fowler! Being a collector of identifed Rev War weapons, I was particularly inpressed. By the way I have seen several fowlers/muskets with that high "hump' at the juncture of the barrel and breech plug. Most of these are associated with the Hills family of gunsmiths of CT.

Is that a bayonet lug under the barrel?
Best regards,
Dale

Computer still in dire straits, but will try the short response format. In order here: Tom, Thank you for the your comments  and sound advice on using the Forum. The photographer is a professional, Frank Mulligan, and he does product photography in his nice studio. He has done work for Guns and Ammo Magazine in years past.
Alan, thank you for your observations regarding the Howe piece. I have always made the assumption that, as it matches up with Sawyers work in so many ways, it must have been made in the area of Worcester, MA. Howe was a North Brookfield Minute Man and he died in 1776. I hope to be able to put the whole story on here, soon.
Dale, the gun has a bayonet lug as well as a front sight. The ramrod is now wood, but surely was iron during the period of use.
Michael, the breech is standing, not a hooked set up. Rear sight is a groove in the tang.
Thank you everyone, glad that it pleases you.
Dick

Is that the original lock? It sure looks pristine.
