Jaeger front sling swivel
« on: May 02, 2010, 12:08:06 AM »
Never having made one of these I'm wondering if this seems large enough to set around the forarm of a Jaeger stock? It's a little tight on the stock I got from Ron Ehlert, so I'm wondering if I need to go back to the bench and do another one? How wide are they between the ears?

I think you are making your swivel a lot beefier than it needs to be.  The disc through which the screw passes can be slimmed down considerably on both sides.  the swivel should fit easily around the forend, to swing freely, and to allow room for the leather or fiber sling.  Here's three examples I pulled out of my files...hope they help.
The first is on my Jaeger, the second on a Ferguson rifle, and the last two are on a 1800 Baker rifle.

Another swivel. They really aren't very large in dimension. Just try to break a loop, and you will be surprised at how strong they are. The screw will bend first, splitting the wood right off the forestock, and probably the swivel will still be holding.

Oh, here's a lug for the swivel screw, on the left. wide, and tight tolerance for the screw diameter. That will help add much strength to the swivel, and help prevent the wood from taking any strain. Slotted fore and aft to let the wood move without binding.

Thanks Gents, I was trying to copy that loop style that is at the bottom 'cuz that's what is on the rifle we are making in Kentucky this summer. I have the barrel anchor made but I'm basing the parts around a #8 screw. I think if I go to a 6/40 it will push me to think slimmer. Maybe a heavy coat hanger..... :-\

PS; my anchor to the barrel looks exactly like the one on Acers over the coals. Least I got that part right  ;D
