Keeping pace with VA Riflegun
« on: May 17, 2010, 12:13:13 AM »
Finished up some carving today , inspired by Ed's progress and suggestion to just jump in. Dont look too close. Not particularly happy with the lower volute and certainly have some cleanup to do.
The KRA Moravian CD has provided reference material for this build as does the early Bethlehem work of Allen Martin. Thanks to Rich Pierce also for his info on using the Chambers early germanic lock.

I wish you joy, brother. You jumped, and landed on your feet! I look forward to this project finished up.

Looks great.  Love the thin buttplate too.  Did you make it?

Thanks guys. Rich, I took an Reaves Goehring early lancaster I had laying around and beat the &*%$ out of it to get an Oerter style ( I hope ) buttplate. It's unique if nothing else.

That looks really nice. Dont sweat the "rough" spots. I always find areas I am not really happy with, then go back & fix'em. I wonder if the day will come when I work through a piece "once or even twice" and will be satisfied with it with out fussing over & over.
I have been thinking about those KRA CDs also and I wonder how good they are.

The KRA CD's are fabulous. You can zoom waaaay up. I have the Christian's Spring CD, and want to get the others.

I'd like to see more views, but there is nothing better than these CD's. A great tool to have in conjunction with the RCA series of books.

Hey Tom, look'in good!  I especially like what you did with the thumb piece on the patch box.  I also like the way the volute on the left transitions through/under the design and blends into the scroll on the right.  Great start!
