What style of gun uses facetted thimbel?

From time to time you see thimbles that are filed facetted instead of octagonal.
Which original guns used this style of thimble?

Best regards

I think that I have seen the most round thimbles on guns with half round barrels. It seems to go with the whole design. That is not to say that there are no exceptions; there are. Not sure that any particular school favored round, or faceted as each style shows up in most, if not all schools.

Diamond faceted thimbles were sometimes used on European arms.  I believe JP Beck might have used them occasionally as well if I remember correctly.  They definitely aren't very common at all on American guns.

Lehighs often present 16 facets instead of 8.

I'd venture a guess that no particular "school" used only one type of thimble. I'd say that it was the gunmaker's preference as to what kind of thimble he would use.Obviously the faceted kind would require more time and probably were more expensive. Some gunmakers used faceted thimbles exclusively and this has become a trademark which helps identify  that gunmakers work.  Others might have used them occasionally depending on what a customer wanted.
