gold inlayed pan/why?

hello.......i am thinking about getting a new smoothbore---16 gauge officer fusil an thought about putting a gold lined pan on the lock.Before i run ahead an do it,what was the reason they did this? did it help with ignition? clean up better?last longer?? what?????.thanks....sonny
