« on: June 02, 2010, 07:49:54 PM »
I've recently come across this rifle.  I know it is a Sutter lock.  but I don't know anything about the rest of the gun.  Any info you can share would be great.
There are 4 pictures in the album... I haven't figured out qyet how to get the pix right on here lol

Once again thanx and much appreciated             ~ Amanda

Well the lock is Bedford; but to my eye the rest of the piece is a bit too bulky to be so!

Looks like maybe someone 'restored' an old rifle with a Sutter lock--looks like a replacement to me...

I kinda figured it was something like that.  Like it was a replacement piece.   :-\   Eh I am so lost as to what the gun is.  Or even what something is worth.  Please help me !! lol  ???

any markings on top of the barrel?  and will they let you take it off the hooks and get pictures of the cheekpiece (any carving)  and side plate (if any)?

not that it would help me ID it, but I'd like to see them  ::) - and it might help some of the real experts here.

The rifle predates 1970's for sure, however many people think that an old piece must be worth a lot.
There are several knowledgeable people that can give you a good idea what the rifle is.
That %*#@ Antique Road Show has done more damage to many collectibles by over inflating their "values"
But with study and education you can make a good purchase, and add to your Sutter collection

Old Ford2, I totally agree with you about shows like that... I think they just tell the people the highest amount they can get to make everybody think they have a house full of treasures that need appraised so that ppl go out and seek their services so they can make $.

Razzgirl027 I open the photos of the W.M. Large w/ Sutter lock so you can see them  http://picasaweb.google.com/steg86/WMLarge  The two rifles yours and mine look very much alike, also you said that sutter used silver inlays, which my rifle has. Is there any caarving on the butt of the rifle or do the inlay have engraving? If so we may be able to compare to see if the style is the same. thanks  steg49

Hi Steg,  thank you for opening those pictures.  They do look quite alike.  I'm in the process of getting more information on the gun in the pictures I had posted.  Just waiting on a reply.  As soon as i learn more about it I definately plan on posting it.  But i pretty much know that the gun in my pictures has a replacement lock in it.  And that's about it.    ~Amanda

Has the barrel even been taken out, to look at the bottom flats?
It's possible there may be some marks under the wood.
