simple banded horn I just finished

I just finished this horn today the horn is 13" outside curve the base is 2 3/4" diameter and is black walnut.. the applied tip is turned antler ..the bands are secure to the horn with copper nails ...

When you turn those antler tips, do you use a wood lathe? How do you find sections big and straight enough to start with? Thanks      Gary

Yes I use a wood lathe and as far as findingsections straight and big enough well that is the fun part for this tip I used a piece of Elk antler

 If I may; Sometimes they do not have to be straight enough, just big enough and SOLID enough to get what you want out of it. You would be surprised what you can get out of a small tip. Quite a few tips were two parts so they did not have to be but so straight. I have had many nice looking racks, as far as tips go, that made no tips. I have heard that bone was also used for tip but I have yet to see a bone tip or find a piece of bone that would work.
