Pewter Nosecap question
« on: September 18, 2010, 09:58:49 PM »
I poured a pewter nosecap on a maple stock and I'm in the final sanding stages, whiskering, etc.  I have a gray coloration on the wood for a couple of inches behind the nose cap.  Lighter and darker with the curl.

I'm planning to use homebrew aquafortis to stain the wood.  Do I need to worry about this pewter residue?  If so, how can I remove it?

Spray with with carb cleaner.  It'll wash it away.  Works for other parts that are filed in and leave residue behind on the wood.

I use lacquer thinner.  It works great.

I use a white artist's eraser.  It picks up all the metal left over from sanding over brass or pewter, and stain goes right on without issue.

Thanks guys.  I have all that stuff.  Think I'll try the eraser first and go stronger if needbe.

Taylor,  I will have to give the white eraser a try.  I have several of them in my shop I use to back sandpaper.

Dr. Tim, I do the same thing as Taylor. Its the white vinyl eraser. Several Co's make them, probably all the same.
