Help IDing a school?
« on: September 21, 2010, 06:38:14 PM »
A friend has this smooth rifle and I'd like to copy it. He said the builder based it on a Christian's Spring but I'm not sure I agree with that.
Also, does anyone know of a stock supplier that makes a precarve similar enough that I could modify it? Not looking for an exact duplicate but as close as possible.

Thanks in advance!

Rich

It has no relation Christian Spring work.  Putting a CS style trigger guard on it will not change that.

It looks like a fowling piece/fusil stock.  Shouldn't be hard to replicate.

What's going on at the muzzle?  Looks like he wants to be able to mount a bayonet.

Ryan, kinda what I thought. Guess I'm learning something hanging around here.
The front sight is just large. Similar to a bayonet lug but not quite that big. It's a 12 bore and supposedly  is made from an unchambered Mossberg Goose Gun barrel. Not real sure about that either.
The buttplate is quite wide, about 2" and perhaps early York?

I thought it looked like a fusil stock too. Guess I'll be heading in that direction.

Tim, it's unbelieveably light and shoulders quite well. It's one of those guns that everyone in my reenacting group wants because it's just so darn nice to carry.

I think Dave Keck's Driesbaugh  style might get you there.  [www.knobmountainmuzzleloading.com]

It looks similar to some Berks County Rifles I have seen. Check with Dixon's. He has stock in that profile.

Its interesting, I like the stock architecture ..... but the trigger guard just seems "Stuck on" needs something slimmer and closer to the stock at the grip rail... of course a simple fowler guard would look good too.......Hhhmmm........
