What 'school' or style would you call this pre-carve?
« on: December 26, 2016, 05:32:59 AM »
I'm terrible at sorting out the different schools/styles of L/R by the architecture characteristics.

I got this full length pre-carve with bbl inletted and ram-rod groove cut some time ago just 'cause I liked it. Getting around to finally working on some projects for myself now.
Came w/ bbl and breech plug. BBl is inletted to the breech face.

It has a Getz 36cal, 43" long bbl swamped.
BBl at breech is .910 narrows to .660 then out to .775 at muzzle.

I'd like to make a Southern style rifle out of it if that'd work with this pre-cut style.
The smaller of the two flint-locks at the bottom/ right of the pic of the locks would be my choice.
The double throated lock looks too big on the stock.
Everything else I have on hand is Germanic  in style and probably won't go well with a Southern rifle from what I understand.

But like I say, I'm not sure the style the stock represents,,so let me know what you think.
I have a new DaleJohnson(?) lock, a small Siler and large Siler also.

Thanks for any guidance!

I see no reason why you could not make a SMR out of the blank.  It looks kind of like a Lancaster stock based on the triangulation of the buttstock.  I am sure there is more than enough wood to make it into what you want.  You are correct about the top 2 locks being Germanic in style.    I would use the bottom left Baile's lock if it were mine. I have one of those locks in a southern gun that Frank House built that is as fast as any lock in my flintlock arsenal.

Your pre-carve is a rather generic "Lancaster style."   That basic design can be adapted to many architectural designs.  since you are using a rather slim 36 cal. barrel, it would not work well for earlier guns.  It should work for your S.M. gun with the English water proof pan lock.
