Thanks! The maker sure could carve. It's terrific to see some of these European guns that were kept in like-new condition.

Hurricane,
Thank You for posting. I hope the Museum Committee Continues to make provisions for these precursors to the Longrifle. I for one, would like to see more published !

What a great Jaeger. The very first Jaeger that I copied had very similar carving, but mostly incised. There are so many lessons to be learned from studying the carving techniques exhibited on this piece---a very worthy addition.

Can somone who has actually seen this rifle read the name?
I can't tell if it reads Zully (umlaut over the u) or if those two "L;s" are actuallly two script "S's"
Spetl either way, I could not find him, neither in Gardener nor Erhard Wolf

WOW! I must admit that this is the first Jaegar that I've checked out; I like it. Any idea as to where and when it was built? Also, the almost total lack of a chip-out surprised me. I was under the impression that a fantail plug left chip-outs over time. One of my sons was able to inspect one that the owner thought dated from about 1780 while he was in Germany.

I would say 1760's-1770's or so, and built somewhere within the Austrian sphere of influence.
Is it smooth, or straight rifled?
