How does one cut the groove that goes from the barrel through the tang so that you can see the front sight.  I have seen these on some fowlers and pistols.

Generally a round file can be used, depends on what you want to do.

I was thinking that it is a round file cutting in, but that just seemed too simple.  Sometimes the simplest answer is the best.

Take time with layout. Accurately scribe a center line.

Round....hmmm never thought of that. How big of a file diameter?
I've always used a 3 sided file for a V-groove.

Start with a 3 corner file to get it straight, then use progressively bigger round files. You could also use a combination of both to get the shape you want.

smaller diameter chain saw files can be used effectively after you have your groove lined out.
