Musket barrel
« on: August 14, 2010, 12:43:47 AM »
I have an 184? original musket barrel.  Can anyone tell me the correct size for a breechplug?  It looks to be 7/8" is this correct?

I don't know the inside diameter of the breech on that barrel, but I would check the threads very closely before you try to fit a breechplug. The few military guns I have worked on from the time of the War of Northern Aggression, and before, had something akin to metric threads, or possibly Whitworth threads. I dunno, but they were not American Standard threads.

God bless

Mr. Robert Hoyt, the barrel maker in Pennsylvania, would know as he does much work with these kinds of barrels.   Lon

You will not find a currently made plug that will fit, the threads are supposedly a French pattern, not English or US. What model musket is it? If it is a standard M1816, M1840 or M1842 original plugs are available. Try Lodgewood Manufacturing at:

http://www.lodgewood.com/index.html

If you have any questions about the reliability of this company, ask any member of the N-SSA or longtime antique arms collector or gunsmith, their reputation is sterling.

Lodgewood currently has original plugs in stock for the M1816 and M1842 at $35 each. The '42 plug should also fit the M1840. The plugs they have are original and will fit, however, remember that they should still need some fitting.

Just got Bobby Hoyt's number off the Lodgewood Manufacturing site:

BARREL WORK, stretch, sleeve, refresh or new barrels; call Robert Hoyt, 717-642-6696 at Freischutz Gun Shop 700 Fairfield Station Rd. Fairfield, PA 17320

Lodgewood Mfg site:

http://www.lodgewood.com/

I have personally known the owner of Lodgewood for around 30 years as I worked the Spring and Fall NSSA championships for over 25 years.  I have purchased a huge amount of original and repro gun parts from him.  You could not ask for a better vendor.

I have only met Bobby Hoyt a couple of times, but I have seen his work for years and years.  Absolutely first quality work.  He would be my first choice for such work.
