I showed some of these photos, but not all of them on another forum and quit posting them out of concern for the client and their plans. Happily they consented to let me post them where ever I felt it was appropriate.
This from Bob Copner the chairperson of the 1 of 1000 endowment:
"The horn is the 1 of 1000 Endowment horn for 2011. When we reach a total of 300 members of the 1 of 1000 (we currently have 269)we will hold a drawing for your horn. All members who have not won a horn will be entered in the drawing once. Those members joining since the drawing for the 2010 horn will be entered twice. "
Here then are photos of the completed 1 of 1000 endowment horn for 2011:
I inlaid an artificial ivory medallion in the cherry base plug and engraved the NMLRA logo on it.
Around the neck of the horn I carved rings made up of leaves and petals....
Then I back cut the petals and leaves, carved the leaves and I gilt the inside of the petals with 24k gold leaf. I was looking for a kind of a surprise look. i.e. you couldn't see the gilding when looking directly at the horn. but when you view the spout and throat from the spout end you get to see the gilding.
On the inside curve I did an illustration of a long hunter shooting from behind a tree and the forequarters of a buck. those illustrations bracketed the "one of one thousand and 2011.
Here's a look at the whole horn from the top.
the outside curve has an eagle standing on a shield in front of a group of flags. He's clutching arrows in his right talons and an olive branch in his left talons.
The eagle was then framed and two smaller illustrations were added on either side.
I've done this engrailing once before but I like it so much I decided it would be appropriate here.
It was an honor to be able to do this horn. I had a great time making it and I hope I did not embarrass the guild.
