New S'Gost rifle in library today
« on: January 04, 2011, 10:09:01 PM »
Some thoughts on the new SGost rifle addition today.  I'd like to know if their are makers marks on the lock to confirm my feeling that this is a work on the earlier side.  The engraving on the barrel is halfway between the
1840 simpler work I've seen and the 1860 and later  more ornate engraving.  The rear sight has definitely been placed over the W in his signature.  The sideplate is similar to other early rifles and not one of the
commonly used wing like later styles.  The engraving on the patchbox and wearplate
do not quite show evidence of his later use of shading techniques.  I note
the wrist is thicker than most of his rifles.  The drop is signature SGost.
I too would like to see caliber, length and width of barrel.  Another clue to it being early is that the tang is short and only has one screw.  All the later rifles had two.  I'd love to see a picture of the front sight to see if it had
the 4 circles punched across the brass and steel.
     Very happy to see a new one popping up.  Thanks to the submitter
for letting us see.  She's a beauty.

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Suzkat,
      The barrel is 32" long...0.980 @ breech...0.970 @ waist...0.990@ muzzle;
      Bore is 0.340 land-to-land; 0.360 groove -to-groove;
      LOP 13"; Weight 9.5#;
      Lockplate is marked... Whitmore, Wolff & Co.  Pittsburgh...inside an oval cartouche ( badly pitted though );
      The front sight does have the circular 4 punch marks on the corners, but they also are badly worn also.
       The barrel does not show any other dovetail ( filled or otherwise ) that would  indicate the  rear sight was ever anywhere else ??? ???
