OLD PERCUSSION
« on: January 17, 2011, 09:08:24 PM »
I have an old percussion smoothbore with a commercial H. ELWELL lock. Could any of you gentlemen tell me about the time period, etc.  Nice gun, silver inlays around the barrel wedges, looks like a burnt-rope graining effect. Thank you.

The lock probably was made by , Henry Elwell of Birmingham England 1838-1857.....Sellers list a Henry Elwell, Seneca County , Ohio, 1810-1812,Lockmaker...But I could not find him in the Ohio books..In Carey's book he has a H. Elwell, 1770 in Liverpool PA.....But I am guessing your lock was probably made by the England maker..Naturally this tells you nothing as to who made the gun...Can you post pictures??ps, joesalter.com has a H Elwell smooth bore, item # 2714, does your gun look like that, if so your gun was made in England, probably  by Elwell.
