Acer,
I really like the moulding on the lower butt stock of your gun. Could you please post a picture that shows how it terminates? BTW, the carving on the PB lid blows me away too! Thanks.

Anyone else that wants to post pictures of lower butt stock embelishments will be most appreciated. Thanks.

O,gawd, no, that's not the jaeger! that won't be done until 2015, just so I'm not rushing things.

As far as the moulding goes, um, I dunno if any of the photos below tell the whole story. Thelink to the album may help, and I can cruise my folder for a better pic of the terminations.

That's a smooth rifle, done a couple of years ago, or five maybe, even.

It's supposed to be RCA#42-ish, without getting too anal about it.

Well I'm more of a "leg man" but I'll see what I have in my archives that would be usable Don't usually shoot the closeups of butt moldings since I just terminate them simply by blending the into the trigger guard area. I got to run Down to Dixon's today to deliver a few rifles to folks meeting me there. so I will try when I get back

Thanks for the additional pictures and the link.... very handsome gun. I haven't been a big fan of the step-wrist.... until now! The moulding and termination really make it "work".

I do hope that others will post their variations and thoughts on this topic.

Thanks for the kind words, Ron.

On step toe stocks, I find that they are a touchy breed. Some look great, and others just don't cut the mustard. I think it's in the proportions somehow, and I couldn't really tell you how. I think it's a gut feel thing.

I like how these early step toe styles became more subtle over time, as in the Lehigh stocks, until the step is a mere hint.

Hey Tom I'm back! The place is still there where you left it in July
Left my house at 1pm Got there at 2:30 pm Threw the Bull, made my transactions ( for two pieces I recently finished) did some shopping and was back in time to have Dinner at 6 pm with the family for my wife's mother's 80th birthday! ( just rub it in) Seriously Wish I had more time to shop but not as much stuff in stock as in July Wanted some Reeve's "blobs" but nothing to be found. That place is always busy though.

I'll try to get some step wrists moldings posted but they not as fancy as yours Mr Terminator

Acer, I have those german silver nails. They have one ring shank if you're interested. I like your way though and think I'll make me a set of your tooling! Iv'e been rolling my little nails on my bench under a course file!
As for your comment on "some step wrists work and some don't" you are right. I just know its proper use of Golden Mean and laying it out right!
As for the "butt moulding" stuff......... oh well.... a subject best left alone!

Susie, now you have taken the lid off the proverbial can of worms.

I am not a proponent of the golden mean theory in my work. I think it was invented as a guide for those who did not have a good natural eye for proportion. This is not to say that I have a natural eye, but to say that I lean on my own sense of design and proportion for what I do, rather than to lay everything out by the golden mean. It has its place, but should not be used as a replacement for your own sense of judgment. In this day, it is oft made to apply to guns that in all likelihood the maker never even heard of the GM.

You might take one of my guns and study it with the Golden Mean, and you will probably find features where you could apply it very nicely. However, the gun was not created with the GM, but things in the design fit the proportional 'rule'. Where does that leave us? I dunno, this is here I run out of steam.

I also like to have details that vary from the 'norm', in an effort to give life to the object, to draw attention to, or away from, a feature.

I am also testy today. Too much coffee, methinks.
