Original Day Horn
« on: October 22, 2010, 09:02:40 PM »
Was out with my wife hitting a few antique shops in the town of Ludington MI yesterday and found this old powder horn. It was on the bottom shelf of a glass display case with a tag marked "Mouse Exterminator" $30.00.  I had the woman store keeper open up the case and told her that it was an old powder horn. She did not have a clue and said she'd call the owner of the case. She came back with the owners price of $20.00 and said it was his final mark down for the "mouse exterminator". I just shook my head and pulled the wallet. Getting it home I found it to be about 1\3 full of caked fine black powder. Guess the mice must have been lapping up the stuff and kicking the bucket! :D

Joel, your name should be 'Mr. Lucky'! Great find and thank you very much for sharing the joy. It is just a grand little horn and they gave it away to you. It don't get much better than that. Will go great with the 'rising sun' box rifle. Enjoy!

Joel,

What a great find! I wonder how many mice have met their fate via this fine horn? ;D  Thanks for sharing the pics.

Very pretty! And if it works good on the mice, let me know - I got EXTRA and I might need to borrow it.

...and the race is on to see who replicates this first!  ;D

I want to see them! This is a nice one to "duplicate."

That kind of good luck sure takes a lot of "browsing" through a whole lot of glass ware, knick knacks, costume jewelery, and you all know the rest of the stuff most current antique shops stock. I just about went cross eyed after the third store where this horn was found. I have a lot of vision problems looking through glass door cabinets with my bi-focals. Them old powder horns are out there though. Have run across a few others over the years. I found a large scrimmed horn earlier this past summer at my home town antique mall. It was a real screamer. Dated in the 1840's and reference to Catalina Island with whaling ship details pictured. I was negotiating with the owner/dealer on a price but never struck a deal. Kermit....feel free to copy this horn all you like. Here are a couple more pictures.

Joel, the photos belie the fact that the horn is actually very small in size. Makes it all the more desirable and clearly fits your 'day horn' descriptive phrase.
The 'Catalina' horn is an important one, if authentic. It sounds like it might have been made and/or used out here in Southern California sometime between 1850 and 1880. There were many shore whaling stations along the coast, and the Channel Islands where otters, along with seals were hunted as well. So, the horn would be an historical item appropriate to the place,  the time and the activities.
Whalers actually rowed panga type boats from shore far out into the ocean and harpooned gray whales, towing them ashore to the try stations. Several have been excavated on Ballast Point here in San Diego, producing bullets, percussion caps, and the usual trash one finds in such old sites.
It might be a good idea to pursue that horn; there is a museum here that would have interest, should you wish to eventually sell it.
Thank you for the information and more great photos.
Dick
