Can any of you comment on these barrels and their quality, finish and accuracy please?

Many thanks for any experiences you can share concerning the barrels.

I have one of his chunk gun barrels.  It's a .50 cal. that's 1-1/8" across the flats and 50" long.  I can't comment on its accuracy because its not been installed in a stock yet.  The quality is as good as any.  I never comment on the finish of a barrel because its unimportant to me, as the finish will be what I make it.  Does that help?

I have used Howard for several custom barrels octagon to round smooth and rifled.   Howard is noted for his chunk gun barrels as per TOF's post.   The one rifled barrel is in the hands of the client, and he says it is very accurate.  I recently shot the 54 smooth barrel to regulate the sights, and I was impressed that as a smoothie it punched five holes touching at 25 yards w/ no load development.  The other rifled barrel is sitting in a stock waiting to be finished.  The exterior finish is about like a Colerain, as he does not drawfile them as some do for extra $$.  I have no problems using Howard's barrels, and will use them in the future.  His delivery time was really great, and he can make barrels up to 50" long..as I remember.   Good value for the $$.   Howard is also a Banjo picker FWIW.      Ron

Do any of you know what kind of steel he uses in his barrels?   Any opinions of that steel?

Thanks for the replies everybody.

No web site that I'm aware of (he's old school!  ;D)

Not sure what kind of steel he uses but all his barrels are cut rifled and he will put whatever twist rate you wish in it.  He can make barrels up to 54" in length and up to 1 3/8" across the flats.  I'm building a chunk gun around one of his 48" x 1 1/8" .50 cal. barrels I bought from him at Friendship a few years back.  Heck of a nice guy and a heck of a fiddle player too.  He always sets up at Friendship just North of Tip Curtis and across the alley from the gunsmith's shop.

When you contact him, ask about his bluegrass CD that he has. Great music to listen to while you're working in the gun :)
