18th century rifle nosecaps
« on: February 07, 2011, 05:21:36 AM »
I'm half paging through RCA and half watching the steelers make a comeback.  A couple of questions for those who have seen a number of early originals.  I've noticed that nosecaps are not often pictured.  I have seen a few examples of rifles with chevron engraved nosecaps.

1. Has anyone ever seen a brass nosecap that has scroll engraving or other patterns engraved (other than chevron)?
2. Are simple sheet brass open ended nosecaps found on early rifles from regions other than Lehigh and Bucks?  Ever on 18th century German rifles?   I've read on older posts they have been found mostly in these two areas in America but not sure if occassionally found elsewhere or how common they are.
Thanks for any thoughts.

I've seen at least one John Armstrong rifle with a slight amount of engraving on the muzzle cap, it was done at the breech end of the cap.

I have never seen an open ended muzzle cap on a longrifle that wasn't from the area you mentioned.  I'll be interested in hearing what the others have to say.
