Need info on Huntingdon County PA gun maker David Douglas
« on: February 12, 2011, 05:19:16 AM »
Hi folks,
Recently my brother met an individual from Huntingdon County PA who showed him a rifle by a Huntingdon County PA gun maker named David Douglas.

My brother noticed it looked very similar to Andrew Kopp's rifles. The owner stated that David Douglas worked for and studied under Andrew Kopp at his shop in Geeseytown outside Hollidaysburg (which at the time was part of Huntingdon County.)

Can anyone offer any more information about David Douglas, or know of any rifles made by him (and/or available for sale)?

Thanks,
Brian

There were several  Douglass ( two ss"s) and Douglas family members who made guns in Huntingdon. From my limited experience the stock architecture and abundant similar styled inlays (furniture) and to some extent engraving style are similar among many gunmakers. Please refer to Whisker's book for a large pictorial collection of other makers from the area:" Gunsmiths of Bedford, Fulton, Huntingdon & Somerset Counties" that easily allows one to compare. The Museum on this site has many examples of Kopp guns, as you know, and a few other makers from that area.

Thanks hurricane. With that assistance, I found a David Douglass ( two ss"s) listed at the Kentucky Rifle Association.

He is listed as having worked in Frankstown Township, which includes Geeseytown, with working dates: 1850-1867.

So he may very well have worked with Andrew Kopp in Andrew's shop in Geeseytown.
