Rare John Small Rifle at Auction
« on: March 02, 2011, 06:56:57 PM »
"beast44k" found this and originally posted it on the thread about Grouseland and Harrison.  This a stunning piece made by John Small of Vincennes Indiana.  It has long been in a private collection and only a few photos of it have been published.  But it is a magnificent piece.

Go to lot 2500 and  you can pull up the full description.

Let's all go in together and buy it, each investor can have it for 1-2 weeks per year....depending on the number of people it'll take, naturally.

Even though way out on the western frontier, John Small was second to none. He was a gunsmith, silversmith, maker of surveyors instruments, ferry boat operator, sheriff, and Colonel in the militia. What a beautiful rifle!

There are a couple of very nice color  photo's of this rifle in the book "The Kentucky Rifle" by M. Lindsey. I just got the book and always find the color shots to really bring these great rifles to life. There are a couple pictured there that I thought I was looking at for the first time. The Simon Lauck "The Sunin Cleps" rifle for one. WOW what a beauty!

I can't help but wonder if there is a connection to the Small family who worked in New Lisbon, Ohio. I own a Samuel Small half stock and have seen a couple of John Small rifles. There is a general similarity in the stock shape and patch box. The problem is, in a very nice A.O.L.R.C.  article by Tom Pike in Vol.X1, No II in August 1989, he says that John died in 1825 and is buried in New Lisbon. He also associated John with Henry Walter. I have looked for Small rifles for some time but have not found any that fit my wallet. If I remember right there are also guns out there by David who was John's son. The gun up for auction is of much higher quality than any I have seen in person but the Ohio John was certainly capable of this kind of work. Was there a connection? Best Regards, Jack
