Screws

Well, I'm new and hooked bad on this building game. Been searching for a place to purchase steel screws at a some what reasonable price. I found this and thought I would share. Maybe everyone in the world knows this place or someplace better, but anyway, for what its worth. www.donsfurnitureclinic.com

Hi Bob,

Welcome to ALR.  If you've got the bug, you will fit in very well here.

On screws, I have not used the supplier you mention.  I just go to my local hardware store and buy the size and type screws I need.  They are plated, of course, so I soak them in toilet bowl cleaner for a few minutes, then rinse well with water, takes the plating right off.

Hi Bob:  Welcome to the ALR!   The link for screws looks good - if they are plated you can burn the plating off with a torch.   Also check to see that the slots are milled on center before you use them.  If you get the domed one they can be dressed with a file in your drill press to fit the curvature of your stock or other mountings.  They can also be case hardened if you desire.    ;)     Hugh Toenjes

If anybody actually bothered to look on the screw website, it says they are "unplated."

Geez.  I didn't look at the website...  why bother.  The gentleman stated.... "Been searching for a place to purchase steel screws at a some what reasonable price."  I assumed he wanted unplated and I'll bet my hardware store plated screws and an ounce of momma's toilet bowl cleaner are cheaper than mail-ordering screws, plated or not.

The problem around here, and perhaps others have the same problem, is that none of the stores have slotted screws. You can get Phillips head screws any size you want, but the slotted screws are hard to come by.  :(

That is true for some places, but Lowe's and/or Home Depot (can't remember which right now) here has bags of slotted woodscrews, and Ace has an amazing variety as well.  They are all plated, as far as I know, though, so you have to take that off.  I have just sanded the top some to remove the plating and left the rest plated in the past, but I may try Ron's trick with the TB cleaner.

I have used muriatic acid in restoration of tractors that I wanted a bare metal to start with. BE VERY CAREFUL! It is hightly corrosive and will inflict injury if it gets on bare skin or in the eye. Only takes a short while. Dump out the part and wash off with water. Dry and use it.
