Long Locks

The lock I'm planning on using in my Hawken build is stamped inside with the words "Longs Locks Denver. It is a left hand lock and I am wondering if it is a good lock or should I get a different one? Frank

    Very good lock and nice looking. R.E. Davis makes that lock now if you very need any parts for it.    Good Luck    AL

I used a Long lock on the only Hawken I ever built and was very pleased with it.  I sold the rifle after a couple of years and hope it is still shooting great for its new owner somewhere in Colorado...that was over 20 years ago...I think Ron Long passed recently?

Anything that Ron Long touched is top shelf.  I can speak that from personal experience.

Ron Long also made the best barrels, I think mostly for his own use, if you ever shoot against him you would lose.

Is it one of his square tail late English locks?  I did not know he made those in left hand.  If you have one I would say you are a lucky man - I know some southpaws who would love to have that lock available in left hand for a southern mountain rifle.

I think Davis does not offer a left-hand version.

Well, I took the lock apart to clean and polish it and being a "newbie" I dropped the fly and after 3 hours of looking with a magnet still cant find it. I want to thank all of you for your responses especially the one telling me that Davis still makes the lock. I just got off the phone with them and they are supplying me with a new fly  and also a set of springs and a spring compressor.I'm feeling better already. What a great web site this is!!!!! Really happy to be here!!! Frank

Amen to that.  I had an underhammer that Ron built for me back in the early 80's.  It had a tapered .40 caliber barrel and a 1 1/8" false muzzled bench gun barrel.  Used to shoot with Ron for a penny a shot.  Boy, did we have some crusty old dirty pennies in our shooting box.

As of a few minuet's ago Ron was still alive and grouchy.  He is in a fight with Balder cancer but he is doing well. I'm sure he will be surprised that he "just past recently".  I have to agree with everybody that he made a fine lock.  He is retired now and just fooling around with mostly his own stuff. (I still cant beat him, in anything he shoots)

!glad to hear he is still with us--musta been a false report, but sorry to hear he is fighting cancer.  Our thought s are with him.

Well guys , I took the loc k apart to clean it and naturally dropped the fly and after     3  hours sear ching with a magnet couldn't find it!!!!! Talked about bummed out!!! I contacted Davis and talked to Tim, he sent me a new fly and a couple spare springs. In the meantime I got a case of bad pneumonia and was uncouncous in the hospital for several days. I'm home now and just installed the fly and naturally it was a perfect fit!!!!Tim is a true gentleman. When you consider that he could just as easily have told me parts weren't available but he could sell me a new lock with far more profit for him but instead did the gentlemanly thing and went out or his way to get me  the parts and back on track on my build!!!Here is a man and a company that has my undying  support and anything I need on this or future builds, if they have it I will get it from them no matter the cost. What great service, cant say enough good about them!!!Feeling kind tired now better get some rest but will be back later. r   e davis #1 in my book. Frank
