Modifying sear or trigger
« on: March 16, 2011, 03:00:00 AM »

I need some help here.  I'm working with a TVM Tenessee kit and having problems with contact between the trigger and the sear on the lock.  I've got a small Siler lock and a Davis #004 double set trigger.  If I set the trigger, the trigger bar will strike the sear and release the lock.  However, I can't get any contact between trigger and sear when using only the front trigger to release the lock.  I don't think I really want to bend the sear very much.  Can I silver solder or modify the sear in some fashion to increase the area of contact between trigger and sear?  Or should i be looking at modifying the trigger in some way.  Suggestions are appreciated!!!

I may be misunderstanding your situation,  it almost sounds as though your triggers aren't inlet deep enough?

That's how I read it too.  Not inlet deep enough. You can buy set triggers from Chambers . They have them made to their specs with taller triggers ie  they reach up higher. It makes it easier to fit the triggers on some builds. Or,  you could inlet the ones you have deeper...if that would be easier.

I don't see why you couldn't build up the trigger bar some.  I have a set of L&R 1710's that looks like that has already been done at the factory -- something like a sliver of 1/16 thickness welded on top of the trigger bar.  Regrettable in my case, because I am just going to file it back down, but it would be good in your situation, assuming your inlet is already deep enough.

My thoughts, The front trigger bar is rising while setting the rear trigger ????? Causing the front trigger bar to trip the sear??? If so the triggers are either to deep or out of position maybe.. Have you blackened the triggers and cycled to see if there is contac being made and where???

More info please..

If your rear trigger is tripping the lock as it normaly should from the set position, and the front trigger is not the problem most likely is that you have your triggers located a bit too far to the rear.  Usually on a Davis 004 DS trigger the sear should sit just in front of the adjustment screw.  If the adjustment screw is forward of the sear your front trigger will not reach up far enough to function.   There are very few guns that need to have higher trigger bars, usually you will need to grind down the bars a bit or bend the sear up a bit or sometimes both.   Check the location of your triggers before doing any soldering.

I met to say if the adjustment screw is too far to the rear of the sear the front trigger bar will not activate the sear.  sorry---in a hurry.

Is it at all possible that the whole assembly is too far foreward and the front trigger is missing the sear all together. Blaked things up and check it out.   Ceers   Bob
PS not probable but possible???

Here is a shot of a Hawken I built using the L&R triggers. Note that the screw that adjusts the trigger is aligned directly under the sear bar hole. I got the triggers a little too close and had to bend up the sear bar to keep things working properly

Thank you so much for the suggestions.  I will re-check the location of the triggers and trigger adjustment screw in relation to the sear. It may be that I need to inlet the triggers deeper.  I'll look at that in the morning and see if that fixes the problem.  Thanks to all!  :)
