back locks
« on: March 21, 2011, 03:36:05 AM »
Opinion on these action and also trying to find pictures for this type of rifle . I am thinking of a halfstock with a wooden rail , in 36 cal around 38 or 40 inch straight barrel in percussion. So if any of you guy's have any idea your welcome. I find them interesting in look, but  mechanically i have no idea. This would be my third try . Do they fall in Tennessee style?I would be doing every part except action and barrel.

I have an original fullstock similar to the one above posted by Dave B that was built in North Alabama, probably Tuscumbia. The only difference is the lack of the guard spur and it has a drum rather then a bolster. Pretty much a utilitarian piece of the last quarter of the 19th century, with a highly figured stock.

Here are two backlock half-stocks made by Dixon & Gilmore, Louisville Ky.

The first is a presentation rifle made for a local attorney in 1858

The second is circa 1855 and has a lock by Bird Brothers, Philadelphia

All the best

Another place you will pictures of back locks in is Ned Roberts the Caplock Muzzlelaoding Rifle.  Some of the very accurate rifles seemed to use them.
