Acid bath question

Other than the obvious precautions in handling muriatic acid, are there hazards I should be aware of in using MA to remove cad and zinc plating from steel hardware?

zinc can also be removed with lye (sodium hydroxide, a.k.a. caustic soda) if you can find any these days. Nasty but not so generally corrosive to everything in a six block radius as is HCl

Do it outdoors away from any metal you care about & stay upwind. If you do it in the shop the vapors will rust any exposed metal. Don't ask how I know.

Zinc plating is safely removed in vinegar by soaking a day or three - don't forget or it'll disolve nuts, bolts, screws, etc

Oh, good. I got it right. Been doing it outdoors and upwind. I'll try the lye thing next time, since I use it to darken cherry, and have some on hand.

Yeah. Just try to find washing soda. :-X
