Almost worthless horn...what to do with it?
« on: May 15, 2011, 07:11:10 AM »
I had a horn that was too thin to do any carving and too bland in color to be of much interest.  However, I kept it around for quite some time trying to come up with an idea of what to do with it.  I ended up scraping it thin enough to see through, just to see what it looked like and then decided that the bland color might look good with a very dark wood screw tip and base plug.  I turned the base plug, screw tip, and stopper out of ebony and decorated them with cast sterling silver stars.  The base plug is made with a threaded cascabel for easy filling and is sealed with a leather gasket. The screw tip has a thin brass liner that has a tapered pour hole.  The stopper is tapered to fit.  Silver bands and the maker’s mark were added to decorate the body of the horn.  The strap swivels are also of sterling silver except for the heat blued steel screws.  The base plug is held in place with citrus thorns and the horn is 14 inches around the outside of the curve, including the base and screw tip.

Don, don't you think a "worthless" and "dull" horn like this would be about perfect along side one of your elegant barn guns? You know, kind of like wearing a big diamond signet ring and a Rolex with your bib overalls...

I really like that horn. Absolutely beautiful, with a reserved elegance. ...but, if I owned it, 1st thing I'd do is take the stars off.   ;D

I have to agree with Don. I don't think that "simple" is in your vocabulary. Beautiful contemporary horn.

Maybe it's a Texas horn. Nope, that would only be one star.

I resemble that remark about the overalls. I think I would be overdressed with that "worthless" horn, but I would be willing to risk it if you would just send that horn my way. ;D I think it is beautiful and it would go with any of the plain looking muskets I have.

But... But...  But...  But I thought... it... it... was (almost  ::)) worthless!!  I'm speechless!  Absolutely gorgeous.   :o

I'd like to add, that for those of us who can't make it to a show, during the year, this forum and the crafts people who post photos of their work, together with the links provided by Art & Jan Riser, Robert Weil (Contemporary Makers Blog) and Fred Garner & Bruce Miller ([Brand New]-The Gallery,) is just an immeasurable, daily, visual experience.

Thanks for the comments.  The horn was fun to make, once I had any idea what to do with it.  A good distraction from aerospace work.  As Don implies, it's a little fancier than it needs to be, but if one doesn't make a few overly complicated things, it is hard to appreciate the unadorned elegance of simpler things.  (Personally, I like Ahtuwisae's Rising Sun horn better than this one.)

Bob in the Woods:

I agree.  After I put the stars on the ebony, I contemplated taking them back off....a little too over done with the silver.  However, it seemed like a good idea when I was making the stars.  I may take them off later, but then I will have to come up with something to fill the holes left behind.  Problems, problems.

Thank you so much for the compliment.  coming from a craftman of your stature it means alot.  Considering that...I too appreciate the simpler ones but it seems that they come few and far between in demand.
