Hawk head and handle fit question
« on: April 29, 2011, 04:20:47 PM »
I have a hawk head very similar to the one Mel Gibson used in the "Patriot" with the exception of the inscriptions on the blade.
I noticed that the handle is larger at the base of the hawk head showing me that the head was assembled from the top instead of the way my smoker handle was by sliding the hawk head from the bottom to the larger top for a snug fit.

I want to replicate the Patriot hawk so how do I attach the head? Nails, ? I don't see any on this one.

She ain't Purdy but she shoots real good !

I'm no authority, but I inspire easily.  In the little pamphlet on hawk building I got from TOW along with my handle, there are a couple of procedures for making brass or pewter caps for the end of the handle.  If that's within the style you're looking at, it would be pretty straight forward to pour a pewter cap that also served as a head-stop.

Depending on how far down the "reverse" inlet extends, you could also clip off the offending wood and refit the head from the bottom as it should be.

A thin leather gasket around the inside of the head will make it tight and seal it. Then as BrownBear said add an end cap to hold it there. Brass, wrought iron or steel would be the strongest. Pewter will work but not as strong.
