From Hat Rack to Powder Horn

Saturday morning I got an old horn salvaged from a hat rack in the mail...
by Sunday night it had turned into this powder horn...I was able to save most of the orange shellac finish. The throat was naturally black under a thin layer of mottled white, so I just worked it down with a file and broken glass...the octoganal spout is applied to lengthen the horn and give it better symetry...the plug is salvaged from an old table leg..the stopper id an old fiddle peg with the new owners initials carved into one face...the measure is river cane...anyway...it was a neat way to recycle some old junk in some spare shop time over the weekend...

 Yard sales and flea markets are a good place to find horns, mounted pairs and in hat/coat racks. Most of the time for less than you would pay for a single horn.

I have a couple of "hat racks" that came from yard sales and flea markets that are waiting untill I start my horner phase.

Yours is really good looking.

My dad just sent a hefer for beef not too long ago. Her horns would make a nice rack but hard to get a nice horn out of (4.5 ft tip to tip). The largest span they have had on a Scottish Highlander in their years of raising them. The skull looks like a longhorn

I have your book , I read your articles in a couple of mags. Try to make most of my own stuff .But compaired to yours . $#*! I am not fit to sweep your shop floor lol.

no way Kenny...dont ever think like that. Thanks for the compliment, but if you seen my shop, you would quickly realize that I am not even worthy to sweep it...hee heee...( never waste a good broom when you can make other stuff out of it...)

Tim, you've created a very cool and believable horn.  I like your use of what appears to me to be lamp wick for the strap, and I shall borrow that idea from you.  Your applied tip adds much to the grace of the horn, and is another clever idea.

Thanks for the good words Taylor...lamp wick is a great idea for straps...
I recycled that one there from the wrapping ties that bound up a quilt my wife bought from Kohls ( with a 30% off scratch and sniff cupon and Kohls cash discounts as usual I expect)...its linen, but is woven like an aladdin lamp wick.
That whole horn is made from recycled stuff...even the staple is made from salvaged old  copper power line wire...besides time, theres about $5 bucks in it, and that was to buy the horn itself off a table at a gun show.
The measure is from a chunk of wild Kentucky river cane.
