One more horn - silver mounted
« on: May 19, 2011, 11:46:15 PM »
Art and Jan posted this horn on the Makers Blog a while back, but I was asked to post a couple of pictures again here.

The raw horn had a thick tip allowing for a heavily carved throat.  The horn is mounted fore and aft with sterling silver bands and strap swivels. The stopper is turned from ebony and the horn tip has a brass liner that prevents splitting.  The base plug is turned walnut and is fitted with a threaded, wooden cascabel for easy filling.  The engraved nautical chart is of the Chesapeake Bay area around Annapolis and is taken (including the antiquated spelling) from a map made of the area in November of 1769.

"No man will be a sailor who has contrivance enough to get himself into a jail; for being in a ship is being in a jail, with the chance of being drowned... a man in a jail has more room, better food, and commonly better company."

 Dave,
I believe you have taken horn making to the High Art level. I have seen similar but they do not reach this skill level. It is going to be hard to top it, I can’t wait to see what you come up with next. Outstanding design, choice of materials and execution.

Very impressive, clean work. Especially the scrimshaw. Wish I could draw like that.

Best regards

Incredible work--the fact that you can work horn, silver, carve and skrimshaw all with a remarkable sharpness is unbelievable.  What a fantastic "work of art"---you should be awwwwwfulllllyyyy proud.
