Was the lid opening spring attached by screw or driven in like the latch release spring? Anybody in the know? Mark.

If you are referring to J.P. Beck, the link shown below will take you to a library photo-that you may have already seen-which shows spring placement.  I believe the spring is sandwiched between the patch box finial and a small recess in the wood.  tim

Noboby is going to pry out a Beck box to discover how the spring is attached. And I don't know of any in the state where that will be revealed. Who cares? Use a screw and trap that so the system is as indestructable as possible.  This is in keeping with Beck who built  exceptionaly durable guns which is evideced by the great number that have survived.

This is one of Becks aprentices rifles, Niclolas Beyer. They have similar styles as you can see to how the lay out of the box is with the driven in spring on its shelf out crop . Note the position of the lid spring. I have what one person thought may be a Christain Beck butt stock remnant that has the inlet for a classic Beck style patch box.at The interesting thing is that the lid spring sits down into a square hole cut into the stock under the finial.
