     What thickness of metal would you guess this buttplate is?This is a Leman halfstock,not a great picture.Just trying to get a general idea.

I don't understand what you're looking for. The buttplate you're referring to is a casting not a piece of sheet brass. Looks to be about 3/16" to about 1/2". Just a guess, needs to be measured. Wish I could be more helpful.

If I were forging it, I would use 1/8" mild steel.  I use 1/8" for all my forged buttplates.  I have a Leman buttplate I forged for my Leman laying on my shelf.  Need to get to that project in the near future.

No more than 1/8. Since you will be pounding it out and brazing it together, all the hammer dings and surface wobbles may not file out if you use thinner stock. Unless you're really good.

The thicker you make it, the more you have to take off at the end, so use your judgement. If you're pretty good with a forge/torch and a hammer, you could get away with 3/32.
