1-2-3 finish

After staining my last build I used a finish I was given. It was called 1-2-3. It turned out excellent. Problem is I'm out of it and  I want to make some more to use on the next build. The problem is compounded by the fact that the guy who gave it to me is gone and I don't know the ingredients or the correct proportions of same. Has anyone heard of this finish and what are the correct proportions? :(

1 2 3 finish could be the old   1part spar varnish / 2 parts blo / 3 parts aged turpentine.
A dash of jap drier don't hurt either.

Greybeard and Danial. Many thanks for your replies. I will make two batches, one with jap dryer  and one with a "dollop" of paste wax added and then come back with an evaluation in case anyone is interested :)

I need help also.I have used a mixture of BLO,clear poly and turpintine, but forgot the ratios. Con anybody help?

there is a finish named "Old Durable" that is made nearly the same as the 1-2-3.

works out to be something like 1 part Spar Varnish + 1 part BLO + 2 parts Turps. Its the finish I've used on every gun I've built, since I learned about it. Makes a nice 'durable' ;) finish and is repairable if needed.

hmmm,wonder if the Jap drier might improve its finish speed?

This finish goes into the wood  .  slop it on and keep spreading it around till the wood is saturated then wipe the whole thing thouroughly down. The turps takes it right into the wood. Repeat after a couple of days. The wood shouldnt absorb much more. After a couple more days I like to take a dab on my finger then buff it with the heel of my hand till bout dry. You can do this a few times untill you are happy. If it's too glossy use pummce on a piece of felt with blo and nock the gloss of a bit and Bobs yer uncle.

Japan drier is a wonderful thing. I was advised to add a bit to my "boat sauce" which is Stockholm tar, BLO, turps. JD and UV really kicks it off fast.

What is "aged" turpentine?    I have never used this concotion, but it appears to be 1/2 turpentine..........should leave the
gun with that smell.    I never thought of turpentine as a finish, or is it just a carrier for the other two ingredients?     Don

Yes Don. Turps is a carrier to get the other ingredients into the wood. Somewhere on this site in the last couple of months or so someone was espounding the theory that you leave turps exposed to the air for a few days that it works better. Could be blowin smoke or not but it won't  hurt anything . Oh yea!  I prefer the smell of turps over paint thinner or pollyurethane.
