At what time of the gun build would one want to start the carving?  Do you want to fit up the butt plate and sand the wood to its shape on the sidea and top,.. or would you wait till after the carving is done to do that?
sorry for the novice question,...but,..ya gotta start somewhere!!  ??? :)

Scott is correct these are just practice blanks.
The carving is the last thing you do to a rifle before staining/finishing.

yes I understand that these were just blanks and all,.. I had figured the question was still relevant though.  I thought I was right, as I thought it was the last thing done,... looking at all the chipping away of wood it got me thinking though.
Many thanks!

So if you don't use sandpaper or scrapers how do you clean up?  After relieving all that wood what process do you use to clean it all up?

Flat chisels and skew chisels.  Certainly scrapers can be used, the point was to show how much you can do just with a chisel.  Jim Kibler does a ton of his carving work with just a skew chisel.

Yip,

I can provide the practice stock shown.  The are only shaped on the cheek piece side from the tail of the sideplate panel rearward to the butplate. This allows for carving in front and behind the cheek piece.  I will sell them for $35 plus shipping.  I could deliver to Dixon's or the CLA for no charge.

Sir, I would like one brought to the CLA show if possible. I'll be there Saturday morning. If there are any particulars let me know.

Yip,

See Ian Pratt at Dixon's.  He will have a table.  I will send your blank with him since I won't be attending.

Clark B,

I will bring one for you to the CLA.

If anyone else has any interest, it would probably be best to send me a PM.

Thanks,
Jim
