Jaegers: Not the rifles.

I'm not sure if this fits this forum or not, but wanted to call attention to an article on German jaegers and their place in German society during the 18th and subsequent centuries.  There is a great article in the latest issue of the Journal of the Johannes Schwalm Historical Association on the Ansbach jaegers during the Revolution.  There were actually two companies of jaegers one from Ansbach and another from Bayreuth that came over with the Ansbach Bayreuth regiment.  They were attached to a combined jaeger corps with all of the other jaeger companies from other German states that furnished mercenaries.  Anyway, this article goes well beyond the Rev war history of this regiment and really looks at jaegers and how they were used as law enforcement officers by various German princes.  Later they went into military service.  This is a good aritcle.  It costs $20 per year to belong to this group, but I suppose that they would sell individual copies of their journal.  You can check out their website for more information.  I think the url is www.JSHA.com but am not sure.  If this doesn't work just google the name of the group.

Sorry about that.  I just checked the JSHA website and it was done in Prodigy which no one apparently uses anymore.  I have a contact for one of their researchers named Henry Retzer who does a lot of work on the Ansbach Bayreeuth regiments and is on the board of this association.  The last email address I had for him was retzer@netrax.net.  You might email him and ask how to receive a copy or to join the association and to let him know that you can't access the website.  All of theri annual publications are well worth the $20 per year.

I've contacted the webmaster of the Johannes Schwalm Historical Association to fix their website (www.jsha.org) so more can view it.  At least some of the links come up now, including the one on publications with ordering information.  The latest copy of the annual journal isn't listed yet, but I think that copies could be purchased at the prices currently shown.  The article on jaegers is really well worth having.  These journals are also valuable for anyone interested in the German troops taking part in the American Revolution.  For me, one of my mother's ancestors was one of these German troops who stayed behind in the Shenandoah Valley.  Twenty bucks a year for membership and this journal has been well worth it.
