Storage Horn?
« on: July 26, 2011, 05:41:38 PM »
I picked this up at an antique store recently while traveling on vacation. It is approximately 21 or 22 inches measured straight across and the opening at the base is about 4 inches with no opening where the spout usually is on  a regular horn. I was thinking about putting in a new base plug with a spout ...but was having a hard time finding any examples to go off. Any thoughts or ideas concerning this horn would be appreciated. probably the other half of a mounted set of horns...  could be made into a nice horn if cut down considerably...

I agree that it was probably a mounted pair at on time. Would make a nice display, or storage horn, but I wouldn't want to carry it far if it were filled.

I think it would make a great "Borrowing horn" as in "Hey friend , could I borrow a bit of powder"??

Ha Ha Ha... a "borrowing horn" it shall be.  I am still trying to find pictures of good examples to go from. I think I remember seeing some  at Fort Ticonderoga...but didn't take any pics. I have seen at least one example of a storage horn which was 21 inches and contained the spout in the base plug...but am leaning toward the more traditional style. If anybody has or  knows of any examples I would love to see them. Jeremy

Would a large Massachussets storage horn fill the bill? I have one that is huge, but nicely made and it is believed to have originated in New England. Let me dig it out and I'll send some photos with numbers. It will take a little while.

Scott and Cathy Sibley's book "Recreating the 18th Century Powder Horn has nice photos of a storage horn on page 80. As does Jim Dresslers book "The Engraved Powder Horn".

Thanks Mr. Glazener.  I love how the description states that the horn has "simple decorative carving".....the word "unique"....not "simple" would be more appropriate.  J.D.K.

Just got back into town....thanks for the pics of the storage horns...very nice. Dick...I didn't see any indication of how a strap would attach to the rear of your horn....is there evidence of something having been there at one time...or was it just outside of the photos and I missed it....or was this thing only to be carried in a wagon and not over the shoulder? Thanks again....Jeremy

Hi Jeremy-There is no indication of a fastener of any kind on the butt of the MA horn, and the front 'carry ring' is almost too small to hold anything. My suspicion is that it was simply kept on a shelf or, on top of a cabinet to be held in reserve for refilling the hunting horns.
Here are some numbers on it: Outside curve is 26 inches, inside curve is 25 inches. Butt is 3 and three fourths inches at its widest. I am struck by the small diameter of the spout hole. It isn't much more than three sixteenths of an inch. Not sure why this is so tiny, but it may be that it helped keep moisture out, the horn was never really finished off, or...?
Glad that you like it and that it could give you a pattern to build on your horn, which has great color by the way. Just for fun, maybe add some scrimshaw? Would look great.
Dick
