Solder stop
« on: August 04, 2008, 08:44:56 PM »
I'm trying to get this done today and don't have time to run all over the country looking for stuff.

I am soldering a 2-piece drip bar on a barrel and I need to leave the breech on it for proper alignment and I know darn well that it's going to solder the bar to the breech as well.

What can I put on the breech to keep the solder from sticking to it.  I've used a lead pencil in the past, but this is a tight shiny fit and the graphite won't stick to it.  Any other ideas?

I've used soapstone in the pass with pretty good results. The kind that comes in  stick form that welders use to mark metal is the easiest. Hope that helps

Some one, maybe JERRYWH, posted on the old forum to use Whiteout on the areas you don't want the solder to stick.  I haven't tried it, so I don't know how well it works, or if it will stick to your polished breech.  Good luck.

To stop silver solder, I use yellow ocher powder mix to a past with water.
You can get it at art supply stores.

I'm going to try that.  If it keeps the solder off the breechplug while tinning the barrel, it should keep it from joining with the bar when I solder it on.

This is a PITA.  I've got to solder 3 pieces with 4 faces together at the same time.

If you can eliminate the flux from the area you do not want the solder to go to that should slove the problem.

The white out really does work. The process was being shared by a Jewler at the ACGG show in Reno several years back. Just coat the areas to be protected.

I had the same problem last year with an English rifle  Trying to keep everything aligned was a pain.

i found it easer to silver solder the two piece drip bar togather and soft solder it to the barrel.
I used a black magic marker on the breech to keep the solder off.  Ray.

Tix anti flux is the same thing as yellow ochre. White out works just as well. there are two types of white out, the water base works better then the lacquer base. They both work. I have used all of them.

Use a normal lead pencil. Assemble the parts and 'color in' around those parts with the pencil. Lead does not stick to graphite.

Put some 'cold blue' on the breech and then assemble and solder the rest of the parts.
Lead solder won't stick to the cold blued surfaces.

Use a non-corrosive flux.

Guys,
This post is two years old and suggestions were needed the day it was posted.  The job is long gone negating the need for continued advice.

I am glad it popped up again.  The white out seems worth trying next time I have to resolder a rib on a shotgun or am soldering an under rib back on.  It is a royal pain trying to get the overun off.

cheers Doug

Maybe we are going green and now recycling posts?
