Graf's powder
« on: August 14, 2011, 11:49:25 PM »
What is everyone's experience with Graf's powder?  I tried it in 3F yesterday for the first time and liked it (for reasons I'll keep to myself for now, so as not to prejudice responses).  I'm thinking it may be worth the slight upcharge over Goex for me, especially if I'm ordering it and paying a hazmat fee anyway, but I wanted to see if other people's experience with it is similar to mine and if it seems to be consistent between batches.

I found very little on Graf's/Wano in searches, but please forgive me if I missed something.  Not trying to demean Goex or other brands (certainly not Swiss, just can't really justify it at current prices and my current skill level :)), either, just curious what others may have experienced.

Try a search - I think the The Ogre (Bill Knight) has addressed these powders before - in detail, right here. Wano, etc.

Thanks, Daryl, but I already searched Graf's and Wano, and nothing much recent came up and only a little detail, but I might have missed something.   I was pleasantly surprise by the powder, so wondering why there isn't more mentioned about it, i.e., maybe I just got a lucky good batch and people who have shot it over a long time period might know something I don't or else could confirm my experience and/or vouch for its consistency.

BGF,
I have never done any experiments, just go with results. Yesterday I used a 12 ga with 2F Grafs and took about 20 shots without wiping or cleaning. The last 5-6 loads were pretty tough to get down and the cleanup after the session ended was brutal. Next time I will at least wipe every 3-4 shots.

have been shooting graf's powder for 6-7 years. started shooting because i live 40 minutes from the warehouse. went to pick up a case. they were out of goex 3f. but had graf and it was cheaper priced than goex then by dollar. i find it shoots much same as goex . have shot both out of several guns. seems to group the same. i think grafs burns a little cleaner. but it's not cheaper any more . rick

I ahve used some Grafs.  Over the choronograph my batch of 3f tends show less velocity with the same charge as compared to GOEX.  GOEX might show a similar lot to lot variation.  However the Grafs also seems to burn cleaner.  I think in a match gun it would make a good powder and I like it in my little 25 as I can shoot more with hunting lubes like Crisco and have fewer fouling/loading problems.  Where power and fouling is an issue I use Swiss and for the amount of shooting I now do may switch to Swiss, but Grafs is also a good powder.

Thanks, all.  One thing I'm not certain about is the difference if any between powder branded "Shuetzen" and the powder branded "Graf's and Sons".  The "G & S" powder description says it is a new formula made with "premium alder charcoal", whereas the Shuetzen is just "alder charcoal".  Is this just typical marketing/re-labelling or is there a difference?  The powder I used was "G&S" 3F and it was noticeably peppier than my current batch of Goex, though nowhere near Swiss, and cleaned up more quickly than Goex.

Marketing.  Notice they never say something like "we use the cheap stuff" only words suggesting theirs is better.   The proof is in the shooting and when a brand starts winning matches is when I take notice.
