Carroll "Spike" Hale ?
« on: August 21, 2011, 05:01:10 AM »
Anybody familiar with this builder?   Do you know where he is from and the quality of his builds?  Is he still working?

Thanks for any information, Skychief

Spike was a friend when I still lived in IL and we used to visit frequently on the show circuit.  Have lost touch with him since I moved.  As I recall, he was a forensic scientist and into trekking.  I think he made a trip or two with John Curry's gang.  He went thru a divorce and kinda fell off the scene for a couple of years.

He lived in the Indianapolis area and helped out Narragansett Arms build rifles and also did their engraving.  I know he built several of the Ferguson rifles and others.  This was before the company was sold and went downhill.  I know he built a few guns on his own but don't think he was a builder per se.  He was more interested in blacksmithing and made knives.  I've got a couple and will show them if I can find the pics.

Dunno,  Pletch or some of the guys who still attend the Connor Prairie gun show might know.

I haven't heard from Spike in a quite a while.  I remember him for knives.  I have a small patch knife he made for me.  I used to have an email address, but even if I could find it, it was before he moved and likely no good.

I have not seen much of his work but his knives and axes have a great reputation.  IIRC he has made period weapons that were used in a few popular movies, I think "Pirates of the Caribbean" maybe among them.
