I recently picked up a couple of 4' steel round bar in like new shape - zero corrosion still had oil on them. Both ends of each bar is colored yellow. Anyone tell me what kind of steel I have here? O-1 - A1, etc.

I don't think there is a standard that relates to ALL suppliers.. Ya need to know where it came from....  Unless things have changed in the past three years...

We deal with PA Steel, Earl Jorgenson and several others.  I'm told it's a mill code, and every mill has it's own.

I purchase steel on a daily basis & every mill has a different color code. If I would buy it from Alro Steel in Indianapolis, In. the steel would be 0-1 oil hardened steel.  Cut a small section off & heat it with a torch & quench it or if you have other steels to compair it with do a spark test. Kind Regards!

In my experience it differs depending on who and where it comes from also, for the local supplier I deal with yellow means S-7 (air hardening, shock resistant )...  I also have some ground 1/2" bar  stock (yellow ends) that I got as surplus from a known source, it is 4340, a Nickel/Chrome/Moly steel.
