Pistol Pattern Book
« on: August 24, 2011, 05:10:21 AM »
Thumbing through DGW catalog, I came across a paperback book called Antique flintlock & percussion pistol patterns....24 detailed drawing of pistols.....unfortunately it's no longer available!  Anyone have a copy or any info on patterns?  I've drawn out three and am not happy with any of them!

Have a nice 6' piece of walnut, not wide enough for a rifle, but plenty for several pistols stocks....if only I can get a decent pattern!

Hlane,

I hope some of the guys come up with some suggestions.  I just acquired a 10" pistol barrel, so I'd like to find a source for some good patterns too.

If there's any help out there, this is the place to find it! ;D

My drawings aren"t too bad, but the grip angle and length are throwing me....they just don"t look right. :P

I have a copy of "Flintlock and Percussion Pistol Patterns" by Bill Newton. I will loan it to you if you'd like. Just PM me the info for mailing.

For another source, "Kentucky Rifles and Pistols 1750-1850" by Jim Johnston probably has more antique Kentucky pistols than any other single book I can think of.  The photos are black and white, but good quality.  The photos could easily be enlarged for patterns. It shows a good range of American pistols from Pennsylvania, as well as Baltimore and a few from the south including a pair of Baxter Bean pistols.

I use "a-lot" and recommend for pistol patterns two books. 1) "The Kentucky Pistol" by Chandler and Whisker and 2) "Kentucky Rifles & Pistols" by James R. Johnson. Also 3) "The English Pistol" a pictorial study, by BeeBe & Bingham, 4) London Gunmakers and English Duelling Pistol 1770-1830, 5) "The American Flintlock Pistol" by S.E. Dyke and Antique Flintlock & Percussion Pistol Patterns---Pryor Mt. Bill Newton.  Happy hunting for the "just right" pistol to reproduce. Have a great day, AJ
"Candy is Dandy but Liquor is Quicker". by Poet Ogden Nash 1931.

That's the book I've been looking for. Don't want to rent yours out do you? Might check the others, I have Thoughts on the Kentucky pistol, but want to build a more european style pistol, Georgian style. Be nice to have a pattern, something full size as I'm having problems using small photo's and trying to draw them full size and getting it to look right....things like how far ahead of the lock for the RR entry, grip angle, etc.

If it is a Georgian style English pistol you want then the Beebe and Bingham book would be a great help if it is still available.  It used to sell for around $8-$10.  Photos are very good.  The binding comes apart but for the money it is well worth it. The photos of the decorative elements, mounts, breech plugs etc. are also helpful if you are looking to build a fowler or English rifle.
