This rifle is from the estate of Edwin Willison.   Edwin L. Willison
passed in 2009.  He had been a gunsmith in Fairmount City PA for several decades.  The rifle has been used as evidenced by some minor burn around
the lock, but it doesn't look like it spent time in the woods.  The lock appears to be a Russ Hamm Maslin.    Several agree that the lock panels
are lacking in artistic merit.  What impressed me most about the rifle was the carving on the cheek and wrist.

The lock panels are strange to me however the rifle has many well executed features. Great wood finish and quality wood. The tang screw slot should line up or not. Thanks for posting.  Jim

Russ Hamm made Maslin locks years ago. CVA used a Spanish copy of his lock on a number of inappropriate rifles.

Any chance Russ Hamm made interchangeable flintlocks to replace this percussion lock?

If I remember correctly, the Hamm flint and percussion locks used a plate with the same dimensions. I have a Hamm flintlock that has been used for forty years and still throws a good shower of sparks. Don't know where you would find a Russ Hamm lock these days, though.

I believe Track of the Wolf is still selling them.  Thanks.

Track does carry a replacement lock that is supposed to fit into a stock inletted for a Hamm lock. I wouldn't be surprised if a little bit of wood needed to be removed to fit the new lock, though. The locks are listed under the RPL locks from L&R.

I was at that auction and bid on that gun, too bad I didn't know you were there. The way he did the breech/ lock areas on all of the guns was quite similar to the T/C that was sold there.

Strange how some gunbuilders can look at an old gun, but not really see it.   I'm basically talking about those lock panels.
It is evident that this guy did have some gun building capabilities, but those lock panels are big enough to play ping-pong
on them.   It's shame that they didn't have a forum like this to post pictures on and get "constructive criticism".......Don

I agree with you Don.  The rest of the gun is so nicely done that if I thought I could get the finish to match, I
would have somebody redo them.

The lock panel is way over-sized, and the Hamm lock makes it look even bigger. Essentially this is a pistol size lock and really only looks right on a very petite rifle.

Another good thought.  Replacing the lock would improve it and might be simpler.
