Hello fellas.....I'm having a bit of a brain @$#%/carvers block. I'm about to carve some kind of design on to the surface of my wooden patchbox lid, but I'm having one heck of a time coming up with a design that looks good to me. Does anyone out there know where I could find some different kind of designs to look at to help get the creative juices flowing? I've drawn and re-drawn several designs on my lid so far, but the only thing I accomplished was a worn out eraser and a little pile of eraser dust.
The few books I have really don't show anything like I'm looking for. Any help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

Extensive carving is not very common on American wood box lids. Perhaps some relatively simple design focused near the base of the lid might work well. The thumb notch could be incorporated in the layout. You may want to look at symmetrical tang carving for some ideas. Some kind of a stylized shell pattern might work well.

Eric Kettenburg's website might offer some ideas for you. I know he's has a few wood boxes there that have some carving.
Most wood boxes have some sort of depression near the end for your thumb to grip on, some being just a depression to some being a fluer-di-lis in relief. Other than that you see some moulding lines parallel to the outside edges and in the case of the Moravians a wavy molded edge.
Highly carved wood box lids are seen on Jaegers and , of course, comtemporary work.
Jim Kibler's recent work, of which he posted pictures here, had a beautifully carving box lid. You might want to search for his posts to take a peek.

Brad,
Never have seen a shooting box with much, if any, carving done on it. Why not make it simple and personal and put your initials, or name, on it.

Sorry Brad, I mistook what you were talking about. Another senior moment.
